Dave Gorman Genius @ BBC studios 24.05.10
Dave Gorman is my idol. I’m sure your very aware of this by now. His pointless endeavours, his books as validating documentation, his storytelling stand up gigs, he is just genius. So of course I’m going to see the recording of the second series of genius even if that specifically doesn’t relate to my practise. Any excuse to marvel in his presence.
I sit there giggling at the wannabe genius telling Gorman and his guests of there fantastic ideas.
‘Flammable jam for making toast when you haven’t got a toaster.’
‘Guide people for blind dogs’
‘Ride on vacuum cleaners’
‘Average people in the Olympics so you can see just how good the athletes are’
I wait with baited breath as they decide if the ideas are genius or not.
“But what is all this for?” Jeanne asks me half way through. “What are they getting out of this? Do they win something or something?”
I’d never really thought about it before. What do they get out of it? Of course, they get validation, validation that their idea is actually quite good, hysterically funny or just completely insane. Of course they can get that down the pub with their mates but here you get bigger and better validation from the general public and well as the master of pointlessness himself Mr Dave Gorman.
Dave Gorman thinks I’m a genius – what more could you want?
